Initio lists six main notes for Side Effect: cinnamon, rum, tobacco, saffron, sandalwood and hedione. The house publishes no top, heart or base pyramid — just that flat list.

The six, as the house lists them
Most houses publish a pyramid — what you smell first, what develops, what stays. Initio does not. Its product page has a single field labelled “Main Notes” containing those six words and nothing else. There is no top, no heart, no base.

The vanilla that is not there
Read the same page’s description and you meet a different fragrance. It calls Side Effect a blend of tobacco, vanilla, rum and cinnamon, and later describes “the leathery, animal, and woody facets of the Vanilla Bean.”
Vanilla appears twice in that prose and not once in the notes list. Saffron and sandalwood do the opposite — listed as notes, never mentioned in the description. Both texts are on the same page, published by the same house.
This is worth knowing before you buy from a list. Retailers pick whichever version they found: one authorised stockist lists coffee, a note that appears nowhere in Initio’s own copy at all.
Hedione is not a plant
Five of the six notes are things you could point at. The sixth is a laboratory material. Hedione is a trade name for methyl dihydrojasmonate, a synthetic molecule that smells soft and transparent, somewhere near jasmine, and is used in an enormous share of modern perfume.
Listing it as a note is a deliberate choice. Most houses name botanicals and leave the molecules to the ingredients label. Initio puts it in the shop window.
What Initio claims, and what we can confirm
Side Effect belongs to Initio’s Carnal Blends collection, whose copy describes hedione as “a molecule known to stimulate the brain’s pleasure and libido pathways” and “a neuroactive trigger”. Elsewhere the house says it makes “functional fragrances with scientifically measurable effects.”
Those are quotations, not findings. We have not verified them, and we are not repeating them as fact. What we can confirm is narrower and duller: hedione is a real and very common perfumery material, Initio lists it among six notes, and the house says it uses a lot of it.
Does it earn its place?
